Four-fingered pianist wows Edina, MN, students

Pianist Hee Ah Lee, who was born with two fingers on each hand, acknowledged applause during her performance Oct. 17 at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Woodrow Byun, a member of the Edina Rotary, brought Lee on tour from Korea to help inspire people with disabilities.

When Hee Ah Lee began to play piano at age 6, she didn't plan on becoming a great pianist. She just wanted to be able to strengthen her hands so that she could hold a pencil.

However, despite being born with only two fingers on each hand and complications that required her legs to be amputated below the kneecaps, Lee became a master of the ivories. Her performances include works by Beethoven and Chopin that most people with 10 digits can't play.

"It seemed impossible, which is the exact reason we took on the challenge," said her mother, Kapsun Woo. "I felt that if Hee Ah could overcome this challenge, she could face almost anything."

Lee was in Minnesota last week and performed for students at Valley View Middle School, and staff and patients at Fairview Southdale Hospital, both in Edina. The 23-year-old from Seoul, South Korea, also gave a full performance at Hopkins High School Sunday, Oct. 19.

Lee, known as the "four fingered pianist," has phocomelia, a congenital birth defect in which the upper portion of a limb is absent or poorly developed. In addition to playing piano with four fingers, she uses a special device that allows her to press the piano's pedals down with her knees.

She played piano and sang at Valley View and spoke with students who are in the cast and crew of the school's upcoming fall play, "Fame."

"When I was 6 years old I started to play piano to strengthen my fingers, but eventually it opened the door to a new world," she said through a translator.

Elizabeth Chaigne, a French immersion teacher at Valley View and frequent director of school plays, said she tries to bring people in every year to connect the play to real life. Last year, when students performed "The Orphan Train," Chaigne invited people who had ridden the orphan train to speak to students.

She asked Lee to perform for the students and answer their questions because the characters in "Fame," like her, are artists trying to overcome difficulties.

"Fame" tells the story of young adults, who experience the difficulties and joys of being an artist, auditioning for a fine arts school in New York City.

"She [Lee] became someone known for her art and not necessarily her handicap," Chaigne said.

Lee said that at times she almost gave up because it was too difficult, but she stuck with it and now performs around the world.

She practices five to six hours a day and performs about three times a week. She is currently on a six-week tour of the United States.

"It's pretty amazing that someone is able to overcome that obstacle," said Samantha Beck, a ninth-grader at Valley View who is in "Fame."

Lee visited Minnesota thanks in part to the efforts of Woodrow "Wooj" Byun, who has a law office in Edina and is a member of the Rotary Club of Edina.

In April, Byun happened to see a video of Lee playing piano on YouTube and decided to spring into action.

"Her performance was so uplifting and blissful it brought tears to my eyes," Byun said.

He contacted his friends and relatives in Korea to find out who the pianist was. He discovered that Lee was a celebrity in Korea. She has been to the United States before, but this was her first visit to Minnesota.

Byun said he was excited to meet her. Playing the piano at such a high level is an amazing achievement for someone with four fingers instead of 10, he said.

"If you close your eyes, you wouldn't know the difference," he said.

Sebastian Roman, a ninth-grader who is on the cast of "Fame," said when the cast and crew heard she was coming they watched a video of her playing piano on YouTube. He said he wasn't sure it was for real until he saw her perform live.

"It is quite different seeing it in person and seeing it on video," said Jake Hardacker, another ninth-grade cast member.

When students asked Lee if she played any other instruments, she referred to her singing and said she considers the human vocal chord one of the most beautiful instruments. In fact, her concerts usually include vocal performances as well as songs on the piano.

While she spends many hours behind the sea of white and black keys, she has other interests as well. She said she enjoys watching Hollywood movies, especially movies starring Tom Cruise.

Valley View's production of a non-musical version of "Fame" is being directed by Beth Solberg. Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Dec. 4-6, at the Edina Performing Arts Center, 6754 Valley View Road.
